CURRENT VACCINATION RECOMMENDATIONS
Designing a vaccination protocol that applies to every horse owner is virtually impossible to accomplish. A vaccination schedule should be designed for each individual horse owner based on their horses’ environment and their risk of exposure to different diseases.
The following combinations of vaccines should be given in the spring (March, April or May) of each year. These five vaccines given once a year bear the minimum that we would recommend. Most individuals will implement a more aggressive prevention program than just these five vaccines annually.
- Eastern and Western Encephalomyelitis (Sleeping Sickness)
ADDITIONAL VACCINATIONS AVAILABLE
- Streptococcus Equi, commonly called ‘strangles’ is available in two forms. There is an intra-muscular injection and an intra-nasal preparation. The one we would recommend is the intra-nasal product, which is given on an annual basis. We would administer this vaccine two weeks before or two weeks following the regular spring inoculations. NOTE: The intra-nasal form of this vaccine should NEVER be given as an intra-muscular injection.
- Influenza (flu) and Rhinopneumonitis (Rhino) can also be given on a much more frequent interval than once yearly. Some horse owners will give Flu/Rhino combination shots in the spring and fall (Fall shots) or as frequently as every two months depending on the ages of the horses and the frequent exposure to unfamiliar horses.
- West Nile will most likely be given once a year. For horses not previously vaccinated a two shot series is required.
- Ehrlichia Ristcii (Potomac Horse Fever) is recommended for horses in areas or traveling to areas where a large number of cases are diagnosed regularly.
- Clostridium Botulinum (Botulisim) is also recommended in endemic areas.
This is a brief overview of most vaccines available for horses. It is recommended to analyze your risk factors and design a vaccination program that fits your needs. If you have any questions about your current vaccination program or on any of the listed vaccines please call our clinic to leave a message. A Veterinarian will be happy to return your call and help to answer your questions.
